It shares an international boundary with the Republic of Cameroon to the East and interstate borders with Borno State to the North, Gombe State to the North-West, and Taraba State to the West and South.<\/p><p>Adamawa State\u00a0which has 21 local government areas\u00a0covers an area of 36,917 square kilometres\u00a0and\u00a0has a population of 3,178,950 (2006 census), 4, 248, 436 (2016 forecast).<\/p><p>The main ethnic groups in the state are the Chamba, Bwatiye, Fulani, Higgi, Mbula, Marghi, Kilba, Ga&#8217;anda, Lunguda, Kanakuru, Bille, Bura, Yandang, Yungur, Fali, Gude\u00a0and\u00a0Verre.<\/p><p>Christianity and Islam are the two major religions in the state although some of its inhabitants practice traditional
