Kaduna\u00a0is the capital city of\u00a0Kaduna State, and the former political capital of\u00a0Northern Nigeria. It is located in north-western\u00a0Nigeria, on the\u00a0Kaduna River. It is a trade Centre and a major transportation hub as the gateway to northern states of Nigeria, with its rail and important road network.<\/p>

The population of Kaduna was at 760,084 as of the 2006 Nigerian census. Rapid urbanization since 2005 has created an increasingly large population, as at 2023, the estimated population is 1.1 million.\u00a0The project population of people in Kaduna state as at 2021 is 8.9 million people.<\/p>

The etymology of the word\u00a0Kaduna\u00a0is said to be a corruption of the Hausa word for “crocodiles”,\u00a0Kadduna \u00a0in the\u00a0Hausa Language.\u00a0Kaduna was founded by\u00a0British\u00a0colonists in 1900.\u00a0The first British governor of Northern Nigeria, Sir\u00a0Fredrick Lugard, chose the present site for development due to its proximity to the\u00a0Lagos to Kano Railway.\u00a0It became the capital of Nigeria’s former\u00a0Northern Region\u00a0in 1917,\u00a0and retained this status until 1967. The city is still influential as the headquarters of various political, military and cultural organizations especially in Northern Nigeria.\u00a0<\/p>

Kaduna is a major industrial centre in Northern Nigeria, manufacturing products like\u00a0textiles,\u00a0machinery,\u00a0steel,\u00a0Alluminium,\u00a0petroleum\u00a0products and\u00a0bearings. However, the textile industry has been in decline. Other light manufactures include:\u00a0plastics,\u00a0pharmaceuticals,\u00a0leather\u00a0goods, furniture, and televisions. \u00a0Agriculture\u00a0is also a major industry in Kaduna, and as such, the Bank of Agriculture has its headquarters in the city. Some main agricultural exports include: cotton, peanuts, sorghum, and ginger. \u00a0Kaduna also has a branch of the\u00a0Nigerian Stock Exchange. \u00a0Automobile manufacturing\u00a0also remains an important part of Kaduna’s economy. \u00a0Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria has an\u00a0assembly plant\u00a0in Kaduna. \u00a0Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), one of Nigeria’s four main\u00a0oil refineries\u00a0is located in Kaduna.\u00a0<\/p>

There is a large\u00a0racecourse\u00a0named\u00a0Murtala Mohammed Square, approximately 1.6 kilometres (1\u00a0mi) round, inside which is found the\u00a0Kaduna Polo Club.\u00a0Kaduna Golf Club\u00a0is also located within the Kaduna city.\u00a0The infrastructure network in the city are currently being developed under the administration of\u00a0Nasir El-Rufai. Kaduna has an inland dry port. The Nigerian military has several installations in the city including the\u00a0Nigerian Defence Academy.\u00a0<\/p>

The city is served by\u00a0Kaduna International Airport. Kaduna is also on the route of the planned\u00a0Lagos\u2013Kano Standard Gauge Railway.\u00a0Kaduna is an important junction on Nigeria’s\u00a0Cape gauge railway network.\u00a0<\/p>

Kaduna is popularly known as the centre of learning, as evident from the numerous educational institutions located in the state which includes: Kaduna State University, Nigerian Defence Academy\u00a0(NDA) Kaduna, Greenfield University\u00a0Kaduna, National Open University of Nigeria, Kaduna Study Center, Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna, National Teachers Institute\u00a0(NTI), Kaduna, Kaduna Polytechnic\u00a0(1968), National Eye Centre, Kaduna, etc.<\/p>
